Bachmann's "joke" about natural disasters makes no damn sense

So you may have heard that everyone’s favorite “holy goddamn jackrabbits she’s an actual potential candidate?” Michelle Bachmann said this about the quakes and hurricanes:

“I don’t know how much God has to do to get the attention of the politicians. We’ve had an earthquake; we’ve had a hurricane. He said, ‘Are you going to start listening to me here?’ Listen to the American people because the American people are roaring right now. They know government is on a morbid obesity diet and we’ve got to rein in the spending.”

Now her campaign is insisting that, no really, it was just a joke.

My problems, in no particular order:

  • God hits the northeast with minor disasters to make a comment on economic policies? How the hell does that work?
  • Okay, it’s a joke. What’s the punchline? Where’s the “joke” part of the joke?
  • Do Republicans think that they get a blank check to say stupid shit if, after the backlash lands, they say it was just a joke?
  • Why the hell is anyone taking this woman seriously?!?
