A little evening schadenfreude

Been swamped at work, so have this: James O’Keefe, the guy who took down ACORN by lying and editing footage, bailed on a New Hampshire appearance because if he goes into the state he’ll be subpoenaed. The winner?

The visit was promptly canceled, and O’Keefe gave his talk via Skype, from the safety of his parents’ house.

Oh it feels good. So good.

You stay classy, Ted Nugent

“I’ll tell you this right now: If Barack Obama becomes the president in November, again, I will either be dead or in jail by this time next year,” Nugent said. “We need to ride into that battlefield and chop their heads off in November. Any questions?”

See, here’s the thing. I know that there were loonies during the Bush era. But I’m… fairly certain there were no celebrities (as much of a “celebrity” as Nugent is, anyway) saying they would be murdering the guy.

Have some more American Taliban

I suppose I should stop writing about Ricky, but he gives me so much to work with

When asked if he believed Obama is a “sincere liberal Christian,” the former Pennsylvania senator said he didn’t believe that sort of ideology exists, and that Obama’s church, United Church of Christ in Chicago, had “abandoned Christendom” and used a non-literal interpretation of the Bible.

“I don’t think there is such a thing,” he said of Obama as a liberal Christian. “To take what is plainly written and say that ‘I don’t agree with that, therefore I don’t have to pay attention to it,’ means you’re not what you say you are. You’re a liberal something, but you’re not a Christian.”

Admittedly, he has a point. What kind of Christian would suggest that hoarding wealth is a bad thing, that paying money to the government is necessary, promote dealing with enemies with pacifism, and not judging others? Jesus was all about blaming the poor for their situations, attacking enemies with violence, and hating others for their transgressions. The Bible never, for example, suggested praying to have one’s sins forgiven, as one forgives those who sin against them. That’d be liberal bullshit.

Obama quotes Jesus: conservatives go bananas

As they say, apparently you can only refer to Christ if you’re doing so to support right-wing policy.

Side note: Tea Party Jesus is fucking hilarious.

Similar, in fact, to Supply Side Jesus.

All which is summarized nicely by one Stephen Colbert.

TN Teabaggers want mentions of slavery removed from history books

To go with our little SC Republican poll, there’s this. Now, in fairness, they don’t want slavery removed from the books entirely, but rather that everything vis a vis the Founding Fathers completely whitewashed to make them all seem like virtuous, and ironically progressive, paragons of justice and equality. Now that’s bad enough on its own, but I have to admit that their method of explaining why is even worse.

Fayette County attorney Hal Rounds, the group’s lead spokesman during the news conference, said the group wants to address “an awful lot of made-up criticism about, for instance, the founders intruding on the Indians or having slaves or being hypocrites in one way or another.”

“The thing we need to focus on about the founders is that, given the social structure of their time, they were revolutionaries who brought liberty into a world where it hadn’t existed, to everybody — not all equally instantly — and it was their progress that we need to look at.”

So they’re admitting that the unpleasant parts are true, but that they don’t want them taught because it… survey says… conflicts with a particular worldview that this group wants promoted.

This is the textbook definition of indoctrination, folks. When a group wants children to be taught from a perspective of promoting a particular message rather than simply laying the facts out, that’s indoctrination. It’s ramming an ideology into the heads of children against their will. Mind-rape, let’s say. They don’t want children to know all of the facts, just the ones that support what the Teabaggers see as the “truth”.

And that’s really the crux of the whole Tea Party movement. They know what “truth” is and want all information spread to be bent around supporting said “truth”. Teach creationism in schools, omit parts of history, do whatever it takes to prop up their bullshit notion of “truth”. They don’t want to let kids learn for themselves, no. That’d be dangerous.

Dem campaign aide's cat killed, "LIBERAL" drawn on its body

I just have no words. No fucking words.

Aden, a veteran of the war in Iraq, said in a statement, “To kill a child’s pet is just unconscionable. As a former combat soldier, I’ve seen the best of humanity and the worst of humanity. Whoever did this is definitely part of the worst of humanity.”

Aden made clear that he did not believe Rep. Steve Womack (R-Ark.) or anyone involved with his campaign were involved in the incident, and Beau Walker, Womack’s campaign manager, strongly condemned it.

I give it a day before some right-wing group claims liberals did this just to foment anger against conservatives. Because, clearly, the tree-hugging tofu-eating peaceniks would kill a cat just to make a point.

I’m at a loss. As a person who’s always had animals in the house, it hurts me deeply. And, frankly, it’s textbook terrorism. Violence enacted to instill fear aiming toward political goals. This is terrorism.

HOUSE Republicans shoot down payroll tax cut bill

I want to specify that it was the House that did this, and not the Senate.

Rather than have a straight up-or-down vote, the House on Tuesday used a maneuver in which it rejected the Senate bill while requesting to go to conference with members of that chamber in a single measure, protecting House members from having to cast a politically unpopular vote against extending a payroll tax cut.

Which they did after the Senate left with no prospects of returning. Sort of the “I’ll do it when you hop on an airplane and pay for me to do it” gambit.

See, the House is far more beholden to the crazy-bananas Tea Party simply by virtue of being district-based (it’s a general rule of Political Science that the bigger the stage, the more moderate the candidate), and so even though the Senate passed it 89-10, the House shot it down with a damn-near pure party line vote.

This really needs to be in every Democratic campaign ad. The Teabagging House is all about helping out the already well-off, but middle America? Go fuck yourselves.
