Allen West channels Joe McCarthy

Quite literally. Claims there is a finite number of card-carrying Communists in Congress and that he knows what that number is.

When a questioner asked West about Marxists in “the American legislature,” some in the crowd jeered, but West took a different approach.

“No, it’s a good question,” he said, adding: “I believe there is about 78 to 81 members of the Democratic Party that are members of the Communist Party.”

After a long pause, West adds that he is talking about the Congressional Progressive Caucus, a group of 76 of the more liberal Democrats in the U.S. House.

You know who hates it when Republicans say this? Communists. But the funny thing is, they have a fair point. Nowhere else in the world are “communist” and “socialist” such vile words, because over here they aren’t associated with actual ideologies, but rather that nebulous bogeyman of the USSR dictatorship. It’s a word not used to describe a mode of thought; it’s used in the same way one would say “Nazi”.

One response to “Allen West channels Joe McCarthy

  1. I got into an argument with a religious fundy once (who I had previously had no problems with) over the whole Communism thing.  She brought up Cuba, North Korea and so on; I said they weren’t communist but Dictatorships and that there hasn’t been any true communist nation on this planet ever.

She refused to get it and if it has Communist in the name, it’s communist.
