It’s deja vu all over again…

Something about Lieberman stoking the fire of war against Iran sounds horribly familiar…

Sen. Joe Lieberman is leading a group of nearly one-third of the U.S. Senate urging that the red line on war with Iran be shifted from building a nuclear weapon to the vague notion of Iran having the “capability” to build one. The neoconservative senator from Connecticut has introduced a “Sense of the Senate” resolution that would put the body on record as rejecting a situation that arguably already exists, in which Iran has the know-how to build a bomb even if it has no intention to do so.

As the article states, the difference between intention and capability is impossible to overstate, in the same way that I have the “capability” to buy a gun and shoot someone. What we’re saying is that it’s valid to start a war against someone who has the capability to someday get something they could use against us. We’re three degrees behind the actual situation we’re trying to avoid and building the case with nothing but hypotheticals.

This is how irrational lunatics start wars, and it’s how we cause our enemies to want to make devastating weapons. When our leaders say that the mere capability to get weapons is sufficient to start war, then said country is going to make damn sure to make those weapons because they’re expecting an attack from us. Simple cause and effect.

We’ve been here before. And we all said we’d learn. Let’s see if we did.

  1. Reminds me of scene in FATAL ATTRACTION when Glenn Close suddenly pops up out of the bathtub.
