Jessica Ahlquist is a hero; religious nuts are vile

I specify “religious nuts” here to avoid lumping everyone in there.

Anyway, so a 16 year old girl named Jessica Ahlquist brought up a lawsuit against her public school for having posted a big ol’ prayer up, and she won. Rightly so, it’s a damn Christian prayer plastered on a public funded educational institution. Clear church/state line crossing. Good for her, too.

Problem: Christians are unable to understand why it’s bad to do this, and have decided to swamp her with threats via social media. Not content to simply disagree, they’re going after the girl herself. I mean, granted, it’s not like the Bible itself has any problem with plastering prayers in public or anything

Matthew 6:5 – And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.

But no, the real issue is all the threats. And this isn’t news. I’ve been on these here interwebs for a long time, and I’ve never seen an atheist level any kind of vile bullshit against a 16 year old girl like saying God will “fuck you in the ass”. And that’s not even limited to her. Anti-atheism is just downright nutty.

I’m not saying this to claim all believers are like this, but this is why the notion of a Santorum or Bachmann style American theocracy downright terrifies me. All that protects non-Christians from legal persecution is the first amendment. Without that, how long before it would be illegal to speak against God? How long before atheism would be a punishable offense? And then the ghettos?

It’s not that everyone thinks like these lunatics. It’s that enough do, and given free reign, they’d come into power eventually and be able to actually act upon these sick desires. Hats off to Jessica Ahlquist. When I was 16 there’s no way I’d have the courage to do what she did, especially in an age like this where death threats can come by the millions.

  1. Bless her for standing up for the Constitution, something every American should do!

  2. It seems that some of the least Christian like people are Christians.
These people need a good douse of Christopher Hitchens.
People who can’t think for themselves, let some preacher, priest, iman…whatever…tell them what to think.
If there were a God, that would not be part of his plan.

    • I’ve never had a problem with anyone who uses religion to better themselves. The ones who use it as a bludgeon to spew hatred upon others, though…

  3. What a fukked-up little b itch

deliver roses to Jessica Ahlquist, the 16-year-old Cranston West atheist who
instead of cheerleading and going to parties decided she’d rather force the
courts to remove a prayer banner from her school. http://www.rhodeblock.com/2012/01/19/florists-refuse-deliver-succubus/

“I love Jesus, and if you don’t I hope someone rapes you!”

I’m trying to find some scathing comment here, but the above quote really makes my point better than anything I could hope to come up with.
