Arizona passes bill to ban abortions based on… gender?

How often does this actually happen?

Under the new Arizona statute, doctors and other medical professionals would face felony charges if they could be shown to have performed abortions for the purposes of helping parents select their offspring on the basis of gender or race.

Backers of the measure said the ban is needed to put an end to sex- and race-related discrimination that exists in Arizona and throughout the nation. They insist the issue is about bias rather than any broader stance on abortion.

This is a case where I would love to see the numbers on this one. As though vast swaths of parents are getting ultrasounds, seeing that they’re having a boy/girl and going “oh fuck that, I wanted a girl/boy; scrap this one so we can try again!” It all feeds into that bullshit conservative trope that abortions are casual operations done by people who just don’t want to be inconvenienced by babies. Something you do on the weekend because you were too lazy to spend seventy five cents on a condom at the gas station.

Oh and then there’s this:

The women having such abortions would not be penalized.

Anti-abortion activists are funny in this sense. They never seem to think the woman should be punished for her role. It’s always the doctors. The “baby killers.”

Let’s look at this in a kind of analogy I think most people would agree with: contract killer. The woman is the hirer, the doctor the hitman, and the baby the target (which would make the womb the location, I guess). In the scope of these legislative abominations, the person hiring the hitman, even in the case of a successful hit, gets off scot free.

The funny thing about this is it proves that the right agrees there is something different about a baby before it pops out. If a woman has an abortion, she’s off the hook. But if she waits until the baby is born and then hires a guy to kill the baby (I know, stupid analogy, just stick with me here), now she’d go to jail. Which means, from a legal perspective, the baby’s life is somehow more valuable once it’s a baby as opposed to a fetus. Even by their own admission, unborn fetuses aren’t quite the same as live babies.

Of course, trying to affix logic to idiocy like this is just intellectual masturbation. Fun, goes nowhere in the end.

  1. The scary thing is, you’re right. Just too bad more people don’t see it this way. Might make things a little clearer when you think about the nutter Conservative types on the abortion thing.

There are numbers supportring this, especially among asian cultues. Second and third chiklren are increasingly likely to be boys, and such trends are not evident in non-Asian cultures. It is such a problem in China that it is illegal to abort based on sex there – one of the things that has led to the trmendous imbalance between boys and girls there.
