I am convinced that if we do not decisively win the struggle over the nature of America, by the time they’re my age they will be in a secular atheist country, potentially one dominated by radical Islamists and with no understanding of what it once meant to be an American.
What I’d like to focus on isn’t the boneheaded anti-atheism, anti-Islam sentiment here, or even the black-vs-white, us-vs-them mentality. That’s not news. What truly irks me is that Newt represents a frighteningly large number of Americans who see all “non-Jesus” people as belonging in the same pot. They’re the ones who can’t differentiate between Communist, Fascist, and Nazi. If you’re atheist, you’re pagan, you’re Muslim. It’s all the same to them.
A wise man once said that in order to defeat an enemy one must understand it, and not only don’t Newt’s ilk understand who they consider to be enemies, they honestly believe that any attempt to do so is tantamount to sympathizing with them (for those who recall the backlash against anyone who dared ask about the motivation behind the 9/11 attacks).
I’m actually okay, on a very basic level, with people who are fundamentally against atheists or whoever running things. That’s a tangible situation that can be dealt with. For someone to be incapable of differentiating between Muslims, to say nothing of… um… “Islamists”, and atheists is another beast entirely.
Also, seriously, fuck Newt sideways for saying that atheists and Muslims don’t know what it’s like to be American.
