Quick tip: Al Qaeda would hate the Ground Zero center

Oh, Fareed. You’re getting more and more awesome every day.

Re: the Al Qaeda attack on a shrine in July.

Why would al Qaeda attack a holy place at a time of prayer? Because it is a Sufi shrine, part of a sect that al Qaeda despises and regards as a deadly foe in the real battle it is fighting, the battle within Islam.

The Sufis are a sector of Islam originating in South Asia. They’re all about mysticism, love, brotherhood and devotion, with very little attention to dogma. They believe in saints, shrines, music, dance, and follow a very liberal interpretation of the Koran.

Sufi poets routinely extol the virtues of wine and song, both forbidden in the purer versions of Islam. Sufism has always believed in tolerance towards other people and religion, and in peace. You can see why al Qaeda views it as its mortal enemy. The more Muslims accept some version of Sufi Islam, the more dangerous for al Qaeda and its extreme jihadist philosophy.

Simply put, Al Qaeda would hate these guys even more than Newtie since they’re trying to “moderate” Islam, something that the Bin Laden Boys obviously don’t want to do.

Of course, I almost forgot. They’re brown and worship a different god, so they’re all evil.

  1. This post was an eye-opener for me. (DUH: Although I had heard of Sufis and liked what little I had heard, I did not not know they are an Islamic sect.) God, I hate admitting such ignorance, but thanks for bringing more light to the benighted.

    • Me too. Kinda sad, huh? Actually, this reminds me of when our country was talking about going to war with Iraq because "of 9/11 and terrorism." My poli sci teacher came into class and basically explained to us that one of Bin Laden's chief goals was to remove secular rulers in the Middle East. In other words, Bin Laden hated Saddam as much as he hated us.
