Random event/observation

I had someone, not for the first time, tell me angrily that our military sacrifices their lives so I have the right to “talk shit on America”. His point, I assume, is that since people died for our freedoms, that means we shouldn’t criticize the country or something.

I never quite understood that. Makes it sound like there’s never a good time to be critical of one’s own country. Far as I can tell, having the freedom to criticize one’s own government means you have the obligation to do so, otherwise you run the risk of complete collapse of the very government set up to allow freedom of speech.

Ironically, this was also a person who more than happily talks shit on the Obama administration, but I guess that’s because Obama’s not from America, hates America, and thus isn’t part of America. Obviously.

The Bush admin expressed that same sentiment when they said, "It's unpatriotic to criticize a sitting President during wartime". Ari Fleischer, when POTUS press sec, said "In times like these, people need to watch what they do, watch what they say." Of course, that was when THEY had the power. NOW is different, if WE only understood like they do.

Reminds me a little of being told, back in 1969, by a goatroper, "This is a free country. And in a free country the majority rules. So if the majority wants you to cut your hair then you'll by god cut it." Reckon he meant that men had died to preserve HIS freedom to cut MY hair?

  5. Even questioning this topic is un-American. Support our Troops or stand in front of them…. unless anyone actually questions why I don't enlist.
