The British media is on top of the impeachment story.

Just so we’re all aware, the Brits are talking about Kucinich’s stand. But the US media is oddly silent, save fairly buried stories you have to search for yourself.

Ron Paul’s “parallel” convention

June 10, 2008 · 3 Comments

I haven’t written about Ron Paul in a while, largely because nothing that interesting has happened. He turned out to be the same non-entity I expected, and just kinda vanished. I figured the “revolution” was dead and buried outside of that little spat about campaign funds.

Hold on.

As it turns out, surprise, he can’t speak at the GOP convention. Well, rather than be an adult, he’s decided to launch his own goddamn convention.

“There is a growing surge of people out there just craving” for a return “to traditional American government, limited government that places personal liberty first and places an emphasis on personal responsibility and essentially gets out of the way after that,” Paul spokesman Jesse Benton told the Pittsburgh Tribune Review. “The buzz we get from supporters is that they are very eager to come to St. Paul and very eager to send a strong message.”

Now let’s think things over for a moment.

Ron Paul has, at least once, said he won’t endorse McCain. And even though he claims he isn’t running “against” Republicans and won’t say anything negative about McCain, the fact of the matter is that he isn’t endorsing the ticket. And now he’s all pissy that he won’t get a speaking slot. Read this, from the MSNBC take:

Aside from Paul and his supporters, the campaign promises “real brand-name entertainers” at their event. Details are expected to be finalized on location (and entertainment) in the next few days.

Ron Paul is basically going “you guys are big jerks and I’m gonna have my OWN convention and it’s gonna be BIGGER and we’re gonna have all my COOL friends and there’s gonna be a BAND and it’s gonna be BETTER!!” Well done.

Full text of Kucinich’s articles of impeachment.

June 10, 2008 · Leave a Comment

We won’t let the impeachment move go down the memory hole through sheer force of ignorance by news outlets. We have the Internet, and the Internet has THOMAS, the Library of Congress’ database of legislation.

Here (warning: PDF file), straight from THOMAS, is the full text of Dennis Kucinich’s address to the House last night.

“Resolved, That President George W. Bush be impeached for high crimes and misdemeanors, and that the following articles of impeachment be exhibited to the United States Senate:

Articles of impeachment exhibited by the House of Representatives of the United States of America in the name of itself and of the people of the United States of America, in maintenance and support of its impeachment against President George W. Bush for high crimes and misdemeanors.

In his conduct while President of the United States, George W. Bush, in violation of his constitutional oath to faithfully execute the office of President of the United States and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in violation of his constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, has committed the following abuses of power.”

It goes on from there, for many many pages. Strap in and get ready for a comprehensive list of pretty much every horrible thing the Bush Administration has done in the last even years. For future reference, the articles are page H088 to H107, dated 6/9/08.

Where the hell is the impeachment news?

June 10, 2008 · 4 Comments

Last night, Dennis Kucinich brought a massive list of grievances to the floor of Congress and introduced articles of impeachment. I don’t know how likely this action is to succeed, but it was still a bold move that should be discussed. After all, Congressmen don’t introduce articles of impeachment every day, and the detailed account of the Bush administration’s crimes was simultaneously impressive and depressing. It was dimpressive.

Where the hell is the news of it?!

I watched Dennis speak for a good two hours last night, and I caught a good part of the 35-point litany of horrible crap the Bush administration has done. What I saw was less than half of the five hours he spent on the floor with the list. It was a truly painful account of pretty much everything that’s gone catastrophically wrong thanks to George W. Bush, from the lead-up to the war in Iraq to the mismanagement of the occupation to the outing of Valerie Plame to the Tillman and Lynch incidents to the secretive energy task force.

It’s been 24 hours since Kucinich took the floor and began reciting articles of impeachment. There is nothing on the front pages of CNN.com, MSNBC.com, or FOXNews.com. There is nothing on the political pages of CNN.com, MSNBC.com, or FOXNews.com. The New York Times site only mentions the action in a Reuters link under the Washington Politics section.

The only mention I’ve found on the major news sites is a CNN Political Ticker post mentioning Kucinich’s re-election web site crashing shortly after he brought articles of impeachment to the floor.
Another friend of mine mentioned he heard something on the radio. That’s it. Right now I’m too damn irritated by this whole situation to even get paranoid about the fact that Dennis Kucinich’s web site crashed after he brought articles of impeachment to the floor.

This is news. Even if it’s not likely that Bush will be impeached, the fact that it’s on the floor now is news. You’d think the major outlets would be able to wedge a mention of it in between its fifteen thousand “news” stories of fluffy campaign coverage.
